Willis, an attorney from Virginia, settled in Sacramento and in 1850 was elected county judge. In 1854 he was ordained and became the first pastor of the First Baptist Church of Oakland. The diary records the journey from a camp near Independence by way of the Santa Fé road, Kansas and Blue rivers, Fort Kearney, the Platte, South Fork, Ash Hollow, Fort Laramie, South Pass, Sublette's Cut-off, Fort Hall, the California Trail, the Humboldt and Truckee, and the mines on the north fork of Bear River. Soon after leaving Independence, Willis's party joined an Indiana company camped near the Charlestown [Va.] Company. Typed transcript available. Available on microfilm. Withington, M. C.
